بازگشت Generally, research is systematic investigation into a problem within an acceptable scientific framework. This course, primarily designed to address PhD students of applied linguistics, aims to draw on two frameworks, namely qualitative and mixed-methods. The basic idea of the course is to provide a thorough description and a detailed assessment of how to conduct qualitative research (QR) as an established research design and mixed-methods (MMR) as a more recent design in applied linguistics. The course first attempts to highlight the theoretical background underlying each design. It then presents the detailed steps required to conduct a study following either of the designs.

More specifically, the course covers the following topics:
Why a QR or MMR design? The nature and foundation of QR/MMR; why QR/MMR design?Choosing a QR design: Ethnographies, case studies, interviews, observations, diaries/journals
Gathering, compiling and coding data
Analyzing QR data: confirmability, credibility, dependability, transferability; triangulation
Presenting research results
Types of MMR designs
Conducting a MMR study
Analyzing data from a MMR study
Writing QR? MMR reports
